Mt. Snow Rocks with Livintrust and Technomad Berlin 15/H Loudspeakers

Mt. Snow, located in beautiful West Dover, VT, is one of the premier ski areas on the East Coast. This past winter, they held one of their premiere events, The Bud Light Anti- Gravity Grail, and Technomad loudspeakers played an important part in the weekend’s activities. Right before the event, Mother Nature dumped 9 inches of snow onto the mountain, although no one in attendance seemed to mind. As always, the park crew and cat drivers dealt with the weather, and the pipe competition went off without a hitch. The folks at Mt. Snow “amped” up the proceedings a little more by combining the Grail and another event, The Mega Mother Hucker, into one action-packed weekend. In the middle of all this weather and competition was Technomad Berlin 15/H loudspeakers, used by the rock group Livintrust to provide entertainment to the sizable crowd assembled for the events. Based out of New Haven, CT and playing in clubs from NYC to Boston, Livintrust is an up and coming act with international success on their minds. Great songs and stage show made this group a standout, and the Technomad Berlin 15/H loudspeakers did a fantastic job of rocking the sizable crowd, despite the cold and changing weather conditions. Skiers and snowboarders alike were heard to remark they had never heard a live band sound as good as Livintrust sounded that weekend, thanks to the Technomad Berlin 15/H loudspeakers. Technomad Articles : Technomad at Pyynikki Open Air Theatre, Finland

Tampere, Finland – The Pyynikki Open Air Theatre, located on a beautiful wooded cape near central Tampere, with its world-famous revolving auditorium, is one of the oldest, and the most popular, open-air theatres in Finland. Scandinavian weather wreaks havoc on the sensitive technical equipment required for such a venue. Traditional “All-Weather” loudspeakers, that were designed for sunny California, usually become quite troublesome when installed outdoors for any amount of time through the hot, but sometimes very wet and cold, Finnish summer season.

Some 70,000 people saw and heard the “Unknown Soldier.” A historic production based on the Finnish-Russian war in the Joselininniemi, 1941-1944. The “Unknown Soldier” is almost a national epos for the Finns. Everyone in the auditorium knows the story, which was written in 1954. The show was the largest production ever performed at the Pyynikki Theatre. Of the total production budget of 13 million Finnish Marks – approximately $2.5 million US – 130,000.00 Finnish Marks was used to update the sound reinforcement system.

The sound system designer of the show, Simo Savisaari, has experienced years of problems with soaking wet plywood loudspeaker cabinets, left ravaged from the weather. The previous loudspeakers were installed in the trees surrounding the theatre, from early May, when the weather is still usually quite chilly, until early September. At the end of those five months, most loudspeaker cabinets are completely ruined, even though extreme measures are taken to protect them, such as covers, tarps, etc.

“We used to call them disposable loudspeakers,” states Simo. “Most of the loudspeakers are hung in very awkward positions around the cape, so it is impossible for us to take them down every night. This installation is tough on traditional loudspeakers. Plus, it is a bit difficult to get the financial chief to buy new loudspeakers every year!”

SPEAKERS OF THE STORM

When Simo started to prepare for the spectacle; he decided to renew the whole speaker system with the highly weather resistant loudspeaker system. Based upon product reputation, Simo contacted Technomad LLP Technomad’s Finnish distributor, Musiikki Mode, provided the loudspeakers, and the sound crew of the Pyynikki Theatre gathered for the listening-test. The Technomad loudspeakers, designed to meet US Military Specifications, are extremely weather resistant, the sound was very intricate and detailed, and the unbelievable warranty from the manufacturer assured the Pyynikki team Technomad loudspeakers were going to the backbone of the new sound system.

Simo is very pleased with his choice of loudspeakers. The Technomads have lived through the Finnish summer with no problems at all. Customized cast frame bass and coaxial drivers start out with paper cones, but after Technomad’s proprietary three-step chemical process is applied, the driver material more resembles plastic then paper. Technomad’s unique chemical treatment assures the cones will not absorb, or be effected by, water or moisture. The driver material will maintain the proper balance and mass to provide accurate audio in all environments. Technomad’s chemical process also extends the lifespan of the driver itself in extremely hot and dry conditions by preventing the cone material from drying out, weakening and cracking in short periods of time. Water, should it get on the drivers, simply sheds away, like water beading and running off a freshly waxed car.

A Technomad loudspeaker is built into a 3/4 inch thick, one-piece rotomolded shell, they are watertight when their protective lids are attached, and they are also highly resistant to the dust and sand that is kicked-up by the production’s extensive use of pyrotechnic effects. The three-layer, acoustically-transparent WeatherTech™ grill system, with its tight perforation pattern and inner layers of mesh and foam, breaks down and sheds away the most tenacious wind driven rain or water. These incredibly fine mesh and foam inner layers also prevent insects, rain, sand and even the finest dust from entering the cabinet. The precision-density, internal polyurethane foam also acts as a massive filter that collects extremely fine dust that might get past the three-layer grill system. Therefore, highly destructive dust is prevented from adversely affecting the voice coils and diaphragms.

Technomad loudspeakers meet US Mil-Spec 810E, and the cabinets are ATA III rated. Therefore, users of Technomad loudspeakers include the US Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. The Finnish Army recently enlisted on Technomad’s reference list, as well.

Simo notes, “Technomad’s product warranty is unbelievable. A Technomad cabinet is unconditionally warranted for ten years and the drivers and electronics are warranted against manufacturer’s defects in workmanship for two years! Technomads could probably can even withstand normal air-cargo transportation with no packaging! And that is a lot to withstand!”

SURROUNDED IN THE WOODS

The sound system of the Pyynikki Theatre is very straightforward. There are eight Technomad Cairo 15/C three-way, bi-amped loudspeakers and four Studiotec subwoofers surrounding the auditorium. As the auditorium revolves 360 degrees, the loudspeakers are used as main stereo pairs or as surround channels, depending on the current position of the rotating stage. Timo Alhanen cues the music and effects, composed by Anssi Tikanmäki. “It feels like the whole auditorium and the woods are full of sound. The audience of approximately 1,000 is right in the middle of the battle scene of the performance, with the machine-gun company all around them,” notes Timo.

Simo notes, “It’s wonderful to have some real sound pressure level from the new Technomad speaker system. Earlier we had to run the system at its limits, but with the very efficient Technomads, we have a lot of headroom!”

The increased fidelity is already making the sound design for next season more ambitious. “We’re going to go beyond the traditional dog-bark and car-horn stuff,” quips Simo. “The audience has become savvier and they are demanding much more from the overall performance. Prior to the Technomad system, the main point was to work with what we had and make sure the people just heard SOMETHING.”

Simo concludes, “I honestly can’t think of a better loudspeaker for outdoor use. The Technomads sound excellent and can withstand any weather. Take it from me; we sure do have ‘any weather’ over here.”

The Ultimate Outdoor Theatre Experience: Technomad @ Shakespeare in Central Park

The Shakespeare in Central Park festival is synonymous with summertime in New York City. Since its inaugural season in 1957, the prestigious event has attracted millions interested in enjoying world-class theatre in one of the most charming venues anywhere; the park’s open-air Delacorte Theatre.

When The New York Public Theatre needed outdoor loudspeakers for the 2000 Shakespeare in Central Park festival it went to One Dream Sound. David Ferdinand, proprietor of Manhattan’s highly regarded rental house, did not hesitate to make a recommendation: Technomad. Since 1995, Technomad has manufactured loudspeakers offering a unique combination of excellent fidelity, high output, high efficiency and unparalleled reliability in the harshest environments. All Technomad loudspeakers meet United States military specification and are used in armed forces applications worldwide.

“The theatre was looking for a loudspeaker that could withstand summer sun, heat, wind and rain, but simultaneously provide high quality sound for one of the most prestigious theatre venues in the world,” Ferdinand said. “Technomad is the only company that came to mind.”

Ferdinand was familiar with Technomads having used them for an application at another prestigious New York venue: The Big Apple Circus. “The technicians over at the Big Apple Circus absolutely love them,” he said.

Technomad President Karl von Kries sees his company’s involvement with One Dream Sound as the manifestation of Technomad’s goal as a loudspeaker manufacturer. “One Dream Sound is well known for providing sound for some of the most distinguished productions in New York,” said von Kries. “We are extremely happy that they recognize that the world’s most durable loudspeakers are also some of the best sounding.”

Ken Travis, the lead sound technician at Shakespeare in the Park, was also very impressed with Technomad loudspeakers. “It was a bad summer for rain,” explained Travis. “It really poured at times, but we had absolutely no problems with the Technomads.” Travis used Technomad’s flagship Berlin 15/H, a high-output, full-range, two-way loudspeaker, for music and sound effects at the front and rear of house. “I had two-a-side in the front and six in the back,” explained Travis. “I was blown away by the sound quality. There was an extremely high SPL coming from the Berlin’s, particularly in the front. “It used to be that weatherproof meant durable but poor sounding,” Travis added. “But Technomads are incredibly smooth sounding. They are a very, very fine loudspeaker.”

The Technomad Paris 616, with its twin 6.5″ mid/bass drivers, was set-up in a vocal delay ring that Travis said provided exceptional coverage and sound quality. “The bass response from the Paris was very impressive and its sleek design prevented us from having to hide them,” Travis said.

Ferdinand, whose One Dream Sound is now one of the top five rental and design houses in New York, was as impressed with the customer service at Technomad as he was with the loudspeakers. “They worked their butts off for us,” he said bluntly. “We are just breaking into the outdoor market and will not use anything else.”Technomad users include all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, Universal Studios, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Disney Cruise Lines, The White House, Cunard Cruise Lines, Princess Cruise Lines, Rodger Williams University, ESPN Zone, Tony Gwynn Stadium, Cinergy Field and many others. Massachusetts-based Technomad employs 25.

New York-based One Dream Sound specializes in sound system design, rental, sales and installation. Since 1990, One Dream Sound has provided audio for over 50,000 performances including the International Emmy Awards, Big Apple Circus, Carly Simon, The Rosie O’Donell Show, New York Shakespeare Festival and the Williamstown Theatre Festival.

Technomad Loudspeakers at Jurassic Park – 15 Months Later

UNIVERSAL CITY, CALIFORNIA – Doused with 4.2 million gallons of water per day for over a year, Technomad loudspeakers still perform flawlessly at Universal Studio’s Jurassic Park attraction.

In October 1996, Direction Sound/Vision of Los Angeles, California, installed Technomad loudspeakers in scene 12 of the prestigious Jurassic Park attraction in Universal Studios Hollywood. Scene 12, the climacteric indoor section of the America’s largest water-ride, features the world-renown 20 foot tall, animatronics Tyrannosaurus Rex.

As originally reported in December 1996, two of the six Technomad Berlin 15/H loudspeakers were installed in the huge mist cloud, one meter in front of the huge, and three story tall waterfall. Due to a planned Waterfall modification four weeks after the Berlin loudspeakers were installed, a newly routed chute delivers a daily deluge of water over the Berlin loudspeakers. The massive waterfall of Jurassic Park’s scene 12 recirculates 4.2 million gallons of water around the huge animatronics Tyrannosaurus Rex, and directly onto the Technomad Berlin loudspeakers, everyday. Since being installed in the waterfall in October 20, 1996, over 2 BILLION gallons of water have poured directly onto the two Technomad Berlin loudspeakers.

All of the T-Rex sound effects on scene 12 roar out of a Technomad sound system consisting of six Berlin 15/H two-way, full-range loudspeakers and eight Chicago 15/12 subwoofers. The Chicago subs are distributed on the platforms, four subs on each side of the boat track, to deliver T-Rex’s ominous footstep sound effects. Six Berlin loudspeakers deliver the blood-curdling roar of T-Rex, as the animatronics beast lunges at the spectators in the final moments of the ride. Two Berlin loudspeakers are installed approximately 25 feet above the boat track, and fire directly down on the spectators. Two additional Berlin are positioned left and right of the boat track, one per side, parallel to the overhead Berlin loudspeakers, again within 25 feet of the spectators. The final two of six Berlins are suspended in the waterfall, positioned left and right of the animatronics T-Rex, approximately 35 feet above the floor, and approximately 60 feet from the spectators. The volumes of the six Berlins are EQ-ed and blended to deliver the most effectively terrifying sound effect in the themed entertainment industry.

According to Mr. Jim Schmidt, Manager of Attraction Engineering, “We are continually amazed the Technomads continue to perform under these conditions. After several weeks, we simply decided to leave them in place just to see how long they would last. Fifteen months later, they are still in perfect working order.”

Mr. Schmidt concludes, “Universal is really the proving ground for new products and technology. We burn it up, blow it up or try to drown it. If a product can survive this environment, it can survive just about anywhere. The Technomad loudspeakers have proven they are survivors.”

When asked if he has finally tamed his T-Rex, Jim Schmidt, Manager of Sound & Video for Universal Studios Hollywood, comments, “No way. That was never our intention. We wanted to make him more threatening, ornery and angry sounding, so we could leave a lasting, terrifying impression on everyone who sees and hears him.” Laughing, Mr. Schmidt notes, “I want everyone who visits Jurassic Park to have nightmares about T-Rex after they leave here, and we absolutely accomplished that task.” The Tyrannosaurus Rex Mr. Schmidt refers to is affectionately known as ‘T-2’ by the technical staff of Universal Studios Hollywood. T-2 is the 6 meter tall, animatronics menace who resides in the climacteric indoor section of the newly opened Jurassic Park attraction.

T-2’s hovel is designed to resemble a recently evacuated and dismembered laboratory. When a boat full of spectators reaches a trigger-point on the track in this area, Earth-shattering footsteps from an unknown entity, start to reverberate out of the darkness, drowning out the evacuation klaxon and other equally threatening and intimidating sound effects.

Rapidly flashing strobe and emergency warning lights, shifting ceiling trusses and walls, the clatter of twisting and straining metal, venting mist, steam and smoke from shattered pipes and a contrastingly calm, recorded spoken warning announcement adds to the heightened air of foreboding. After only a few seconds, the boat full of spectators emerges from an obstacle of broken pipes and severed ducts, and is greeted by a series of blood curdling roars that have not been heard on Earth in some 65 million years. T-2 suddenly swings into motion. Lunging down and out of the shadows from behind a waterfall fed by shattered pipes, T-2 angrily cranes his neck out and viscously snaps his jaws within almost arms length of the hapless passengers. Just when the passengers believe T-2 will start severing heads, the boat in which they are riding suddenly plummets down the America’s largest water-ride drop to the soaking wet safety of the splash pool 85 feet below.

Mr. Schmidt notes, “Jurassic Park is really a technological wonder. Universal likes to stay on the cutting edge of new technology to prevent down-time and make sure the visitors are awe struck by the time they head home.”

When the entire system and waterfall is on, dew point in this section of the attraction is 100% for as long as 16 hours per day, everyday of the year, except Thanksgiving and Christmas – the only two days of the year the park is closed. Aside from the waterfall, a substantial amount of water mist and vapor is vented into the atmosphere from ‘broken pipes and valves’, to create a greater impression of damage caused by the T-Rex. Mr. Schmidt states, rather factually, “It’s not the healthiest place for loudspeakers. The mist, moisture and humidity in this part of the Jurassic Park attraction is overwhelming. The former sound system could not withstand this environment, and we were left no alternative but to replace it after only four months of service. It was vital we find a powerful sound system that could survive in this room.”

James Byron, president of Direction Sound/Vision of Los Angeles, was contracted by Universal Hollywood to provide the new voice for T-2. Many variables had to be taken into account aside from just the hostile atmosphere. The background noise from the waterfall, the sound of the boat on the tracks and the chain-pull mechanism, registers at a consistent 100 dB.

“When I first heard T-Rex’s ‘roaring’ sound effect through the former loudspeakers, he sounded a little weak”, notes Mr. Byron. “The waterfall and the sound of the ride were drowning out the T-Rex foot steps and roaring sound effects from the former sound system. Plus, there was a lot of sound cancellation caused by the sound of the falling water. Not only did the new system have to stand up to the hostile atmosphere, it had to overcome other sounds that could not be controlled or dampened.”

Technomad WeatherTech loudspeakers were demonstrated to Richard Ales, Senior Manager, Technical Response, and Ed Carri, Sound & Video Foreman, both of whom quickly determined they had found the solution to their dilemma. Mr. Carri is quick to point out, “The musicality, dispersion and projection of the Technomads is all very, very impressive. But it was the fact that Technomad loudspeakers are designed to meet military specifications, and survive in situations worse then the Jurassic Park installation. That’s what made them the obvious choice for the job. If they are good enough to be mounted on M-1 tanks for battlefield simulations, then they should withstand our theme park.

” Mr. Schmidt wryly points out, “Universal is really the proving ground for new products and technology. We burn it up, blow it up or try to drown it. If a product can survive this environment, it can survive just about anywhere.”

For an initial quick-fix, “and evaluation purposes,” stated Mr. Carri, two Technomad full-range Berlin model loudspeakers were ordered prior to tearing out T-2’s original sound system. Originally, the left Berlin speaker was hung in the waterfall. A huge cascade of water was pouring over this cabinet every day until it was repositioned two weeks later. The Berlins are now suspended in the huge mist cloud, only one meter in front of the huge, three story tall waterfall that recirculates hundreds of thousands of liters of water around Tyrannosaurus Rex, every day. Each speaker is approximately 8 meters above the floor, and approximately 18.5 meters from the spectators. When the two Berlins were powered up, they immediately penetrated the overwhelming background noise and projected the ‘T-Rex roaring’ sound effect at a level of 110 dB, 18.5 meters from the source.

According to Mr. Schmidt, “We’re lucky here in the respect we see all of the new technology first, but we are also pretty jaded by all of it. Granted, it takes a lot to impress us. It was really a sight to see all of the technical staff, and then the executives, with such broad smiles on their faces after they toured Jurassic Park with only the two Technomads plugged in. I was very impressed with the sound when I toured the attraction the day after the installation, as well. So happy with the results, we replaced the remaining T-Rex sound system with a distributed subwoofer system consisting of eight Technomad Chicago subwoofers and an additional four Berlin full-range cabinets.”

“Since the Technomad loudspeakers are so small and extremely powerful, a redundant system of two flown Berlins per side was the obvious way to go,” states Mr. Schmidt. “This assures that should a single Berlin loudspeaker stop working, for whatever reason, the other loudspeakers in the array would still function and deliver the high-impact voice of ‘T-2’. The additional two Berlins are kept as spares, but the system is performing so well, these spare units will probably find a home in another attraction before long.”

As a replacement to the original large subwoofer cabinets, Technomad suggested a distributed system of four Technomad Chicago model subwoofers, per side. By distributing the Chicago subwoofers on the platforms, on each side of the boat track, and position them to within 6 to 10 feet of the spectators, the effective sound pressure level is increased by 3 dB to 6 dB, doubling the actual volume experienced by the audience. T-2’s footsteps have become even more all-encompassing, menacing and ominous to the audience.

“After what we experienced with the old, large format subwoofers, a redundant subwoofer system, such as what Technomad offered, made the most sense,” said Mr. Schmidt. “Our old subs were positioned within the mist field, and I am sure that contributed to their early demise.”

The failure of a single large subwoofer cabinet greatly compromises an attraction’s overall impact, and disappoints many visitors, for many hours – or even days – until replacement parts can be acquired and the unit repaired. Mr. Byron of Direction Sound/Vision notes, “A user in this type of application does not realize just how dependent he is on a single large subwoofer until it fails. When the unfortunate happens, 75% of the low end extension of the sound effects is gone, severely limiting the impact of the attraction.”

Each Technomad Chicago sub consists of a 15″ and a 12″ driver per cabinet and they are very small, measuring in at only 83 cm high, 53 cm wide and 27 cm deep and they weigh only 42 kg. Should a single Technomad cabinet, or driver within a cabinet fail, the remaining 7 subs or 3 full-range loudspeakers within the system will keep SPLs high. “While the attraction is still functioning,” says Mr. Carri, “I can have two technicians come out of the darkness, between boats, switch the cabinets and eliminate downtime entirely. But, I am no longer worried about the Chicago subwoofers at all. All of the new Chicago subs are away from the intense, soaking mist field, thereby assuring they should last forever.”

“I needed a speaker that was bulletproof and could consistently perform while being hit with continuous blasts of water and steam -The Technomads fit those criteria. We’re very pleased with T-2 now that he has his new voice courtesy of the Technomad loudspeakers,” says Mr. Schmidt. “I like being in the position where everyone is asking me to turn down the volume.”
