Technomad Vernal Speakers Celebrate 10 Years Aboard Marine Cruise Boat

Climb aboard one of Sarasota Bay Explorers Sea Life Encounter Cruise’s and you’ll be in for a treat. The marine biologist led tours take visitors on a 1-hour 45-minute cruise through Sarasota and Roberts Bay, where tourists observe manatees, bottlenose dolphins, puffer fish and more. The tours are broadcast over Technomad’s very own ultra-compact and waterproof, Vernal speakers. Six Vernal speakers are strategically placed throughout the 40-foot pontoon boats ensuring that every passenger can clearly hear announcements on wildlife sightings and learn from the expert biologists on the intricacies of the bay ecosystem.

Bob Heere, Director of Operations at Sarasota Bay Explorers, originally heard about the speakers via a word of mouth recommendation. The original Vernals were installed in 2007 along with a Lanolin electric paste to protect the terminals.  “They performed wonderfully,” says Bob, “they did exactly what they were supposed to do and lasted 10+ years despite daily exposure to salt water, fog, and sea spray.”

In 2018, the original Vernal’s were finally retired and replaced by a half-dozen brand new Vernal’s which were installed by sound technicians from Prime AV. Even though they spent their life at sea, when disassembled, the Vernal’s showed no evidence of internal damage or salt intrusion, a testament toTechnomad’s rugged, weatherproof designs.

“If you have a need for an outdoor speaker in any environment, these speakers will meet that need,” Mr. Heere attests. “If they can sit out in salt conditions for 10 years, they can survive anywhere.”

Noho Weatherproof Loudspeakers at work in Alabama Music Venue

Technomad’s Noho weatherproof loudspeakers were put to the test during the inaugural Fireside Music Festival in Huntsville, Alabama. Forsyth Consulting designed and installed an outdoor sound system using six Noho weatherproof loudspeakers with 400 watt, 70 volt transformers for the newly constructed event space, The Camp at MidCity. Due to inclement weather, the speakers were installed using a boom lift in the rain and the first three days fo the festival were canceled. The Noho weatherproof loudspeakers withstood the conditions and were ready to perform when the sun came out for the last day of the festival.

Kevin Forsyth, President of Forsyth Consulting stated “The owner [of The Camp at MidCity] wanted great full range sound, and we gave it to him with Technomad being the only supplier who could deliver with less than two weeks’ notice. It was a significant success, and the owners loved the sound quality of the system and the aesthetics which matched the Camp Environment.” Forsyth stated the speakers were tapped at 400 watts, and driven with 400 watts per speaker providing more than enough volume and qualify full range audio for background music, wireless microphone, hardwired mic jack, and television audio to create a truly unique and flexible environment for a facility that is still evolving.

Forsyth went on to say, “We greatly appreciate RCP Development giving us the opportunity to demonstrate what could be done with short notice by Forsyth Consulting, Inc. With the cooperation of Rodger von Kries at Technomad, we were able to meet delivery in a very tight window. We are looking forward to more projects using the Technomad weatherproof loudspeakers”.

Technomad Delivers Big Sound in Compact Package for Illinois Zoo

Vernal and Vienna models deliver news, exhibit information and background music across seven acres in durable, weatherproof package

BOSTON, September 14, 2011 — The bird calls, primate howls and other noises coming from the Phillips Park Zoo in Aurora, Illinois, are balanced with a new, high-quality audio system that delivers news, exhibit information, and background music to some 200,000 visitors each year.

Chicago-based systems integration firm AST (Advanced Systems & Technologies) installed a 70-volt system with eight weatherproof Technomad advanced audio loudspeakers to provide intelligible voice and high-quality musical reproduction throughout all seven acres of the zoo.  Seven Technomad Vernal loudspeakers discreetly cover the grounds, providing audio to visitors nearby the animal exhibits.  One Technomad Vienna loudspeaker provides long-distance audio projection to patrons at the main entrance gate and visitor center.

The compact Vernal and Vienna loudspeakers, mounted on various building eves, light poles, and fences, are part of a custom turnkey installation that replaced an outdated system scarred by time and weather.  Both models are powerful, IP56 weatherproof, two-way, full-range loudspeakers built to withstand tumultuous weather conditions, including the extreme summer heat and heavy rains often experienced while the zoo is open for business.

“We needed a more efficient way to communicate with our visitors, especially in the event of a storm or if an animal were to escape,” said Randy Johnson, manager of Phillips Park Zoo.  “The weatherproof aspect drew me to Technomad, and the sound quality of the loudspeakers has exceeded our expectations.  I recorded some WAV files and have short zoo ads randomly playing in between the music segments, and everything sounds great,” Johnson said.

Johnson enlisted the help of AST for a professional installation, and AST quickly determined that Technomad was the best choice for the project.

“The Vernal and Vienna loudspeakers were chosen for their weatherproof construction, and their throw distances perfectly matched our needs,” said Terry McCarthy, partner and design engineer at AST.

McCarthy strategically placed the loudspeakers outside the animal enclosures and above the reach of visitors.  He also took advantage of Technomad’s flexible mounting options, utilizing the company’s sophisticated yoke mount anchoring system.  McCarthy installed four runs of high-quality, 12-gauge audio cable to provide the 70-volt power distribution to all the loudspeaker locations.

“We hid the cables at Randy’s request so they weren’t visible to the public,” he said.  “This took extra time but it resulted in a great payoff for the zoo.  The loudspeakers blend perfectly into the surrounding environment, and the audio sounds great.  Once you install them, you never have to worry about them.”
